Ode to a Farmer
Go ahead, lie down now, old man
I see in your eyes,
I hear it in your breath,
It’s time,
You need to rest.
You’ve seen many years,
the hay, green and high,
corn in the fields.
Deep, dark dirt,
growing fine in rows.
For now, the cows are in the barn.
Brought from the outside straw pile,
shaken and put down underneath,
for them to bed down.
The tractors are in the shed,
gassed up, and ready for tomorrow.
But there’s no need for you to worry about this now.
No need to think about calves, crops, and other chores.
You’ll be at peace.
Finally, You can get some long-deserved rest
